Action for Mental Illness (ACMI)
We, Action for Mental Illness (ACMI), are a UN accredited NGO working for the cause of persons suffering from mental illnesses. ACMI is an advocacy initiative to impact the rights, quality and availability of support services to mentally ill persons and their families. There are 40-50 million people in India who are the victims of some form of Mental Illness such as Schizophrenia, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety and Bi-Polar Mood Disorder. A majority of them are in the community under the care of their family members. We believe that family care is the backbone of all disabled Indian citizens including those with mental illness (MI) and disorders. Family members have to undergo immense psychological pain, financial burden and social embarrassment but this does not affect their steadfast support and care of their beloved family member afflicted by mental illness.
We wish to provide a forum for the families to cope with the challenges in a positive frame of mind. With this view in mind we run a family care giver self help group in New Delhi called ROSHNI. We meet third Saturday of every month over some tea and snacks. All we need is the presence of family members to be with us in this initiative which is meant especially for them- to hear out their problems, explore solutions and update on the latest information.
